Ivan Toney's Chelsea transfer error highlighted as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang questions asked

An ex-Premier League forward questioned Chelsea's selection of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang over Ivan Toney from Brentford and advised Todd Boehly to change his mind in subsequent transfer windows if the next number 9 experiment did not succeed.

The Blues are adjusting to numerous changes that have occurred during the past few weeks. Stability is now crucial if new manager Graham Potter is to get his squad back on track after the shocking departure of Thomas Tuchel and the Deadline Day signing of the erstwhile talismanic figure for Arsenal. The lack of a cutting edge in front of goal that his predecessor repeatedly warned about befell Potter's team in his debut match against RB Salzburg. The 33-year-old was rather quiet in his Stamford Bridge debut, except from a few missed opportunities. But the Gabon international claimed that he wasn't "100%" to blame for his lackluster Premier League comeback.

It's difficult to play with a mask and an injury, so I'm going to need more time, he said after the game. "Let's hope I recover 100% as soon as possible." After the international break, when Chelsea play Crystal Palace, he will have another chance to live up to the £11 million billing that Boehly paid in the final 24 hours of the transfer window. A London derby that might be postponed, but this time for different reasons, to add to the pain of the Liverpool match this weekend being cancelled due to Queen Elizabeth II's state burial.

Although rail disruptions may result in further fixture delays for West Londoners, the match is still scheduled to take place, and the former Premier League Golden Boot winner hopes to begin his campaign at Selhurst Park. Naturally, this experiment might go wrong, and Boehly could find himself in trouble, especially given that he missed the late £50 million opportunity to steal the in-form Toney.

With Arsenal coming up for the Bees, the soon-to-be English international has already contributed to seven goals in his first six Premier League games. The stated £50m may not have been as expensive as some people initially thought. Particularly given that Gareth Southgate's decision to include the former Peterborough and Newcastle striker in his Three Lions squad for the upcoming matches against Italy and Germany validated that assessment.

Former Premier League striker Troy Deeney thinks the Blues should be in the mix for the Bees star, along with teams like Man United, if the 26-year-old performs well for the remainder of 2022–2023.

Chelsea fans - would you have rather seen big money spent on Ivan Toney or do you believe Todd Boehly made the right decision to opt for the cheaper and more experienced Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang instead? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below!
